INTERVERTEBRAL DISC OZONUCLEOLYSIS: Ozone treatment for herniated intervertebral disc (Cervical and Lumbar)
The department of Intervenional neuroradiology and ozonucleolysis has introduced a whole new, absolutely risk free treatment for the a very common problem in our day to day life, that is prolapsed or slipped disc.

What is slipped lumbar/cervical disc?
Normal Disc consists of central nucleus pulposus surrounded by annular fibres. Degenerated disc will either have diffuse or focal bulge compressing the nerve roots. When there is defect in annular fibres the nucleus will herniated beyond the vertebral margins leading to compression of nerve roots.
What are the symptoms of slipped disc?
Patient with slipped lumbar disc will have low backache, radiating to lower limbs, loss of sensation, loss of power etc. Patients with Slipped cervical Disc will have neck pain and upper limb radiating pain
What is ozonucleolysis?
Ozone (o3) is normally present as what is called as ozone layer at the height of 20-30 kilometre from the earths surface and helps in filtering the U-V rays.
However medical ozone is generated by the ozone generator form medical grade oxygen. It is always a ozone-oxygen mixture that Interventional neuroradiologist will use in particular concentration to treat the slipped disc.
Ozone is unstable at room temperature and disintegrates quickly into oxygen. The half life is 20 minutes. Hence ozone has tobe generated on site for immediate administration.
Why ozonucleolysis or ozone therapy for slipped discs?
Worldwide research by Prof. Mario Muto and Marco Leonardi have shown successful outcome of this treatment on prolapsed disc with 85 to 95% success rate as published in international medical journal as the level of evidence in current practice of medicine where dictum is “evidence based medicine”.
All the other minimally invasive procedures like laser,radiofrequency ablation,chymopapaine has some serous side effects as against ozonucleolysis. Not a single serious life threatening complication was found even after approximately 30000 cases of oznucleolysis published so far. This stresses the safety of the procedure as well as efficacy
We can avoid surgery which for this condition by ozonucleolysis as it is one day procedure, no post operative discomfort ,allows patient to resume routine activities after 2 days
How it acts on slipped disc?
Ozone causes shrinkage of disc to relieve the compression effect. It also has analgesic and anti-inflammatory action to reduce the pain. It revitalizes the disc.
Which patient will benefit from the ozone therapy?
Patients who are have mild to moderate disc disease failed to respond to conservative therapy are good candidates for ozone therapy and will get maximum benefit out of it. Patients with acute severe paralysis with bladder –bowel involments are never the candidates for ozone therapy. Bone degenerative disease will not be treated with ozone.
How to decide who will benefit?
Detailed clinical examination by our team of specialist along with MRI of lumbar spine and EMG-NCV-SSEP to decide which patient and which level to treat.
What is the Procedure?
We recommend two hours nil by mouth before procedure. After some pre-procedural medication patient is shifted to cathlab. Procedure is done in prone position under local anesthesia. Ozone is generated on site and administered via specially made thin and long needle into the nucleus of the disc. Usually all patients tolerate the procedure well. There is no absolute contraindication to the procedure.
What are the post procedure orders?
Patient needs to have complete bed rest for 2 hours after the procedure, thereafter for two days light work.
What are the results?
80-90% of the properly selected patients will get relief of their symptoms next 5-6 weeks time
