A new hip at 96!
Among the many high risk orthopaedic surgeries frequently conducted at Bombay Hospital, one that comes to mind immediately was the one performed on the Late Prime Minister, Shri Morarjee Desai. Shri Desai had a complex fracture in the hip bone and a complete hip replacement was necessary. What drastically increased the risk
factor was the patients' age - the former leader was 96 years old then.

Having taken the necessary precautions, a team of doctors conducted a complte hip replacement surgery that lasted XO hours. So successful was the operation that Shri desai walked without any discomfort until he passed away at the ripe old age of 100.

4 exclusive operation theatres

Comatose on entry, elated on exit
Not very long ago, a 19 year old male was admitted to the hospital's general ward. Treated elsewhere for malaria and typhoid, the young man was in a coma when admitted. Extensive tests conducted by the hospital's neurosurgery department revealed an increase in the size of the ventricles along with a severe case of tubercular menengitis. Without any further delay, VP stunting was carried out to decrease the pressure in the brain. This was followed by carefully monitored antitubercular treatment with the help of steroids. Over time, he not only regained consciousness but was also able to walk. Inspite of being unable to afford the complex surgery and post-op treatment provided, Bombay Hospital ensured the patient was reated with the best medical care available. thereby upholding the founder chairman's vision of 'rendering the same level of service to the poor, that the rich would get in a good hospital'.

She fought cancer...and won!
Doctors at the hospital's cncer department were recently faced with a unique problem. A 45 year old female patient was suffering from an advanced stage of breast and ovarian cancer. The advanced stage meant surgery, inspite of being the only long-term solution was not possible. Combining the various treatments available, doctors used hemotherapy to downstage the cancer and reduce the size of the tumour. This helped to make the patient operable, and subsequently, surgery was conducted. Following the operation, the cancer has not returned and the patient is well on her way to recovery.
